I can't believe the 4th of July is already upon us. It seems like just yesterday I was lamenting about how cold I was and how I was wearing a turtleneck.
Oh wait, that's because I was.
For two years in a row, Portland has had basically no summer. Yes, the solstice came and went, and the weather improved somewhat, but compared to the summers of my childhood, these just don't count. 65' and cloudy is not what I consider the optimal summer day.
Here and there we've had beautiful, gorgeous, sunny, warm days, and believe me, I've taken advantage of them. I run outside, wearing little more than my skimpiest shorts and tank tops, and spend as much time out there as I can.
However, because they've been few and far between, my spirit has been a little bleak. Although I love my new job, am happy my boyfriend's back in town, and am feeling healthier than I have in a reeeally long time, my mental state is still affected by the weather outside. It sounds trite, especially when there is still religious strife and hunger in the world. But alas, now you will know just how selfish I am.
Regardless of the weather, however, the days pass just the same, and all of a sudden, we've reached the end of June and the beginning of July. We've even seen a smidgen of sun in Portland recently, and the forecast is calling for 70' weather this weekend (gasp!).
So, without further ado, here are some ideas for keeping your spirit up (in other words, eating good food) this holiday weekend...have a happy and healthy Canada Day and Fourth of July, everyone!
