I had the opportunity to attend a vegan cooking demo last night at Sweetpea Bakery in SE Portland, that was hosted by Sweetpea and Herbivore's owners, Lisa and Michelle, respectively. It was so much fun. They made food out of Viva Vegan!, Terry Romero's newest book, and the food was delicious. I also enjoyed the chance to see what a commercial kitchen looks like from the back, as we were placed around a preparing table in the heart of the bakery. I had taken a cursory glance at the book a while ago and proclaimed that there was nothing in it that I could eat (being gluten-free, etc.), but after attending last night's event, I actually bought the book because I realized that I COULD definitely eat a few things in it, and I could easily find alternatives to the glutenous ingredients. My next goal is to try to make gluten-free seitan. Woot!
Anyway, I now can recommend to you Viva Vegan!. It has some wonderful recipes, a disappointing lack of photos, and some great hints to cooking Latino food.
