It's that time again. Time to round up the forces and spread the good news to would-be vegans. Try Vegan Week 2009 is happening starting tomorrow, August 15, through Saturday, August 22 all around Portland. The website is here. It looks like it will be a good time, and somehow I picked this week to sub at work more than I have at any other time in the entire year, so I will be missing out on most of the activities.
There are so many reasons to try a vegan diet, even if it's just for one week, and it's so easy, too: try having oatmeal every weekday morning (with maple syrup and dried cranberries, or cut-up fresh peaches and brown sugar), and have fruit with vegan pancakes on the weekends. Then, for lunch, try a falafel sandwich one day (New Seasons has this sandwich available for the summer) or a peanut butter and jam another. Better yet, have vegetable stir fry one night and have its leftovers for lunch the next day. Already, there are 11 out of 21 meals out of the way. Going out to eat may be the easiest and most convenient way to try out the diet initially, and I would recommend Vita Cafe, Sweetpea Bakery, Papa G's Vegan Organic Deli, Bye and Bye, Red and Black Cafe, Hungry Tiger Too, Arabian Breeze, Hopworks Urban Brewery, or Pizza Fino, just to name a few. Portland's a great place to try out this exciting diet. You will have a lot of support and understanding people to help you along.
